Director of Education

The Greenwich Historical Society seeks a Director of Education for f/t position, effective September 1, 2010. The ideal candidate has a history background and a minimum of 3 years experience in museum education, preferably at an historic site, and proven success with docent training and management. Responsibilities include developing adult programs in fulfillment of strategic initiatives, training docents, and overseeing the implementation of teacher and student programs. Executive Director/Curator PT

The Cornwall Historical Society occupies a recently renovated Victorian carriage house in Cornwall, CT and is seeking a part time Executive Director/Curator. This individual would be responsible for the oversight, storage, maintenance and improvement of the collection and would prepare, research, write and install one major exhibit per year. Duties would also include providing the Board of Directors with necessary guidance re: museum best practices and ethics as well as assistance in fundraising efforts, including but not limited to grant writing and social networking. Responsibility for the coordination and oversight of volunteers is required as is maintenance and improvement of the existing Past Perfect database.  Successful candidates will have a minimum of five years work experience, a Bachelor of Arts degree in American History, Art History, Museum Studies or a related field (masters degree preferred) and experience working with Past Perfect or equivalent museum software. Executive Director – PT

The Darien Historical Society in Darien, Connecticut was founded in 1954 and moved to its present location in 1967. It is a non-profit membership organization whose mission, is "the prime resource in the town dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting materials of local historic value and to educating the community about its heritage. The Society operates the Bates-Scofield Homestead, an 18th Century house museum with herb garden, resource library and exhibition gallery for the enrichment and enjoyment of all the community". The Scofield Barn addition was completed in 2009.

The Executive Director provides leadership and management to The Society's programs, projects and funding; manages the headquarters museum, collections and property; and is an advocate for The Society to the community at large. The Executive Director reports to and works with the Board of Directors of 21 members and supervises a staff of two. In this role he/she implements policy approved by the Board and The Society's operations and programs. He/she fosters relationships that promote organizational growth and financial stability and growth of The Society.

The successful candidate should have:

  • 3-5 years successful non-profit management/leadership experience, historic preservation experience preferred.
  • Strong managerial/administrative skills in handling people and projects
  • Creativity in approach to programs and projects
  • Proven success in marketing and fundraising for non-profit organizations
  • Sound community/public relations skills and understanding of the local community and regional organizational dynamics
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills
  • Strong computer literacy and ability to use and monitor technical equipment
  • Top organization skills
  • B.A. in relevant field, preferred. Master's degree, a plus.

This is a part time position, geared to the Museum's hours, which are currently Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Occasional additional time requirements for special events, meetings, conferences could involve evenings and weekends. EOE: M/F/D/V.
