The League Bulletin, CLHO's newsletter, is the chief means of communication to its
members. The Bulletin provides current professional, technical, and educational information to people who preserve and
share Connecticut history for public distribution.
The Bulletin supplies members with a calendar of events including grant deadlines, meetings, conferences and
League programs. It provides the latest League news, job postings and member to member news. An important part of
the Bulletin is the Professional Basic articles which provide practical information to those unable to attend programs
and serve as accessible reference materials. Recent PB articles include "Fundraising Strategies for Small Museums"
and "Exhibit Development". Another great aspect of the Bulletin in the series on Connecticut History which have
included articles on "Connecticut in the Age of Rail" and "Grooming the Great Refuge: A Brief History of
Connecticut Lawns."
 Member Spotlight
In this continuing series, CLHO spotlights some of our member organizations and the exciting, creative, and groundbreaking activities that are happening all the time at historic sites around the state.
The Old Lyme Historical Society, Inc. (OLHSI) has 125 members, mounts popular exhibits, holds sell-out programs, hosts an informative Web site, and publishes popular and beautifully illustrated histories. However, you won’t find it on a map of Old Lyme and you can’t visit it on Saturdays. OLHSI may well be the only historical society in the state without a home. In fact, the Society counts its current lack of physical roots as an asset.
Q. How old is Old Lyme Historical Society and how did you come to be without a home?
A. In 2004, a group of people got together to talk about ways to promote Old Lyme history. We incorporated as the Old Lyme Historical Society in 2005 with a mission to collect, preserve and interpret the town’s rich history. We started doing exhibits and programs at different locations in town and people got to know us. Our membership grew and people started coming forward with stories, ideas, and...

Keeney Memorial Cultural Center Fire Update
Steady progress toward the full restoration of the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center in Wethersfield is ongoing. While the strike damage was minimal, the resulting water damage from fire suppression efforts, proved to be considerable. Water soaked into the attic insulation and ceiling tiles on the second floor and leaked into the building’s duct system, ruining sections of the ceilings, walls, and floors on the first and ground levels...

Swift Waters or Cedar Swamp? Native-American Placenames in Connecticut
When we tell people that we live in Willimantic, Connecticut, they often ask about the meaning of the name. We usually tell them that the residents claim that “Willimantic” is Pequot-Mohegan for “swift waters,” a reference to the Willimantic River, which drops 90 feet in less than a mile as it courses through a narrow gneiss gorge. Strictly speaking, we have told the truth – the residents do claim that “Willimantic” is Pequot-Mohegan for “swift waters.” But it’s a good bet that the claim is false...
